Zara loves her garden and tends it carefully, helped by her many friends. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Quite honestly I've never come across a children's book like this before. ”Zara tends to a garden in a war-torn city.

D Smith

The tagline on the back of the book describes it perfectly – “A thoughtful story of war, peace and hope. The artwork in this book is fantastic and really brings to life the story within.

Happily, it has continued to grow, and the plants are now, “tall and strong and wild and free,” which perhaps also reflects the children themselves as they return to their broken, but ultimately, re-blooming city. But one day, it’s no longer safe to play in the garden, and very soon, Zara and her friends must leave the city, too. The book is also a good conversation starter with a child if you want to discuss refugees.

Tim Roast

They then all have to evacuate, but they return once war is over and Zara sees her garden again. One day as the situation gets worse, Zara is forced to lock up her garden and leave the city.

M. Young

We particularly enjoyed the large pictures with lots of details in. The lovely, lyrical text is superbly matched by Anneli Bray’s rich illustrations.

Topics such as being grateful for what you have, that nature will always win even in tough situations, and most importantly not to give up hope. When she returns she has help from her friends to revive it. This book gently tackles the subject of war with the mention of bombs falling, cracks in the road and damage to the playground without being too scary for young children. A girl grows a garden in a war zone, but they have to leave.
