I felt a strong desire to protect her, whilst also feeling her resilience and moments of strength leaping off the page. I absolutely loved this book from the outset. While her accounts might have taken some people by surprise this old dog didn’t learn any new tricks. If you enjoy an unpredictable thriller that is laced with a dollop of humanity and a delicious sense of humour, make sure One Last Secret finds its way to the top of your TBR!

I could not work out where this book was going, but I was desperate to find out! She’s an engaging character, with a wonderful wit about her and her voice has an authenticity that really sucks you into her world.

The twists and turns as the story unfolds will make you gasp out loud. I was immediately drawn into Dora’s life and felt a connection to her from the very beginning. I could tell he loved her straight away so when he proposed I was rather shocked with her answer and even more that she then took the last job. Parks reveals the truth and tragedy of her life in a measured way that keeps the reader turning the pages whilst they form a stronger bond with Dora.

Parks handles the subject of gaslighting with enviable skill and Dora’s experience at the château charts her gradual descent into a state close to madness in an evocative and unsettling way. I have stated in previous reviews that Adele writes characters that are ordinary folk put in extraordinary situations…… Well I take it all back as there’s is nothing ordinary about Dora.

I loved the complexity of her character and was fully invested and backing her from the outset. I had a sneaky feeling about one thing but I was completely blindsided by other reveals which made this such an amazing page turner of a book. It’s not easy to bring a character to life so vividly, so it really demonstrates Parks’ power as a writer.
As well as this exceptional characterisation, One Last Secret is a marvellous plotted thriller that oozes secrets, twists and shocking revelations. So I was a little disappointed if I’m honest when she started going all lovey dovey on me, when I had so admired her ball breaking attitude and independence.
I felt all of the paranoia, anxiety and fear that she did, such was the redolent nature of Parks’ writing. Two sittings and l was done! Dora’s voice is such a struggle presence in the novel that I really felt like I was being granted access to inside her head. Adele is an extremely talented author and the plot was well written and intense.
