It is sophisticated, and still traditional. The compact, lightweight design is ideal for carrying with you on a backpacking trip or hiking excursion. Haven't had it to a range but the zoom and focus to 100 yard range is looking great. Great beginner's scope and we expect to enjoy it for many years.

I've had more ($150) expensive 20-60X scopes that rapidly lost quality after 20X. I can believe I got this for $50. This adds a few seconds to the focusing procedure which may or may not be critical for wildlife watching. 1 fold magnification on going from the 12x to 36x setting.
