Wow. In case you can’t tell by the fact that this reviews is rambling nonsense rather than an actual review… If, like me, you have been living under a rock and still haven’t read this book, then I really implore you to do so! The Darkling was so intriguing and complex… Dark and cunning… Just everything that makes for the sort of villain I hate to love.

Her life starts as a pretty ordinary young girl, navigating through life one step at a time but suddenly her life is changed forever as her powers surface. The magic system, with its hierarchy, was unique and, as a History teacher, I loved the links to Tsarist Russia, which is what drew me to this series in the first place.

The media could not be loaded. I felt like it made her more realistic.

Perhaps it’ll make more sense in the other books, but it didn’t grab me there. I've seen a lot of spoilers for this book on Booktok and mixed reviews of the trilogy and, to be honest, before starting all I knew about the actual plot was The Darkling 😂*"Thanks for finding me. I don't agree with things he did at all, but there were moments that I really fell under his spell. Even her constant denial of her powers made her feel more human to me.

I wanted to make sure I read the book before watching the Netflix adaptation as I feel the novels always offer more enjoyment; I’m glad that I did. What a fantastic start to a series this novel is!

Alina is a character that has struggled and there are things in her I can relate to. I don’t know who to trust. I also really enjoyed the little bits of Russian heritage that were inter-weaved throughout the novel. While we’re talking about characters… Honorary mention goes out to the Darkling… Who I think I’m a little bit (aka a lot) in love with.

RMW

I think things will get interesting as the story continues. I liked the characters and how Alina grows as a person through the story.
