She’s socially awkward. You got the murders and the “whodunit” plot, and then you have Linda’s past and the mystery of what happened to her father. I loved Joanna’s last book ‘Three Things About Elsie’, so I just had to read this!

They moved from Wales to try to start again, but Linda explains that things follow you, even if you try to leave them behind. Her writing style itself is beautiful – clever enough to sound almost poetic at times, but never out of reach to the average reader – beautiful, yet accessible.

Linda is unfulfilled and deeply unhappy, trying to escape from the mundane by doing crosswords and losing herself in the catalogues and brochures that arrive at her house addressed to the previous occupant Rebecca Finch. But we all have secrets, right? She finds the little nuances and idiosyncrasies in people’s behaviour and shows us their strengths and weaknesses in a way which makes them incredibly real, often in a heart-breaking manner.
9. Joanna Cannon. And it wouldn’t matter what Terry was doing…”Cannon always gives us a character that’s searching for something. You almost feel sorry for her, because all she wants is friends.
Linda had a very difficult thing to deal with in her childhood and her life since has been scarred by this, as her mother’s. Another triumph! Or does it?
Another good read from Cannon. Linda’s narration isn’t quite reliable, because you don’t know the full story, and it can be quite uncomfortable at times. I love Joanna Cannon! I’m not sure it was “tidy”, but it definitely was unexpected.
The storyline has two mysteries happening simultaneously. It took me a while to get used to her! You’ve got this main character, Linda, narrating the story.
