Study Bibles aren't as helpful as good commentaries but they *do* give one a good place to start in answering questions one might have about the text. Now, I've updated to the Fifth Edition and I'm liking it so far. I understand the price point, but I would have paid $10 more for a better quality.

It is of the utmost importance when seeking to both understand and expound the Bible that the Student, Preacher, and heralder of the Bible that those who seek to do so are both accurately and thoroughly informed, The New Oxford Annotated Bible: New Revised Standard Version does all this and they make their claim regarding this Bible, that it is thoroughly revised, substantially updated and contains the best scholarship informed by recent discoveries and also anchored in the solid Biblical tradition. I first purchased the New OAB Third Edition 20 years ago for a New Testament Survey university course. I have the 4th edition and it’s the same quality, nice sturdy but flexible cover.

Paper has a tendency to crease easy. The annotations are plentiful and insightful.

I just have to be extra delicate with it. It was helpful to see what other traditions within Christianity said about the Scriptures since I'd only read from the NIV Study Bible at that point. The paperback edition is much much better. I use it for devotional and worship planning, including liturgy and sermon prep.

It is structured like a piece of literature, so it must be treated as a literary work. Includes numerous maps. It’s a great book to own though. Finally, to quote from this Bible an end note titled "To The Reader,"The Bible carries its full message, not to those who regard it simply as a noble literary message heritage of the past or who wish to use it to enhance political purposes and advance otherwise desirable goals, but to all persons and communities who read it so that they may discern and understand what God is saying to them.

Terrence Macneil

I have the paperback of the 4th edition and I think it holds up to use and abuse much better. That message must not be disguised in phrases that are no longer clear, or hidden under words that have changed or lost their meaning; it must be presented in language that is direct and plain and meaningful to people today. The content itself is not in question, only the physical quality of the book.
