You just jiggle the weights a bit until it locks. I don't do this often, but it can lead to more variation in exercises, and I occasionally do it for tricep workouts or hammer curls.

Also, while the dumbbells are not delicate, dropping them wouldn't be advised as the adjustment mechanism might be damaged. UPDATE November 2016 - Still using the SelectTechs, albeit about bi-weekly since I have switched my fitness regimen. When lifting, the weights feel very sturdy.

You can set the dial to 10lbs on one end and 30 lbs on the other. Still very satisfied. A good texture on metal would have been a lot better. The program calls for a lot of different weights, and I was tired of leaving 8 different dumbbells lying around on the floor of my den.

In order to accommodate all of the weight plates the dumbbells have to be wide. **Edit - I had a dumbbell “freeze” during my second workout.

There is no shaking or movement of the plates at all, and they don't feel much different than dumbbells. The plates are firmly locked onto the handle.
