I love these, and I think that the bad reviews are from people who think that they are a cell phone, and are not willing to use them properly (ie. I could get clean reception while both devices were outside of a building for almost 2km straight line in pretty difficult terrain (lots of trees, no direct visibility).

I'm pretty sure that if there wouldn't be a hill between the two points, I could have gone even further. In an open terrain, these walkie talkies are awesome. Check the attached maps showing my route and also direct distance between the endpoints. outside of a building or car, and with at least some line of sight).
