I mostly use watercolor pencils for small details and undersketches, and this set has worked great for this purpose. The color options are nice as well, lots of blues and orange/reds.

These pencils are also less expensive. I’ve tried a couple of quality brands (Caran D’ache Supracolor, Derwent) that are very good but are not as vibrant as Staedtler. There are a number of other techniques for these pencils and a good YouTube video can be found by searching 'Watercolour pencil techniques by Tim Fisher 'They are a first class product. I don't like the design of the modern Staedtler Karat as opposed to older versions; the older versions had the entire barrel in the color of each pencil, while the modern version only has the color at the pencil end.

However, it had been obviously dropped quite hard on one corner and was carrying battle scars. The main reason I got the larger set was because it seemed to have a better selection of earth tones and neutrals, which is important for me personally; otherwise, I would have gone with a smaller set.

This was meant to be a last minute gift, and as such I didn't have the luxury of returning it, compounding my disappointment further. I used this for the fine details of my watercolor Robin painting. .

Its much easier to get the fine work done this way, or you can leave it dry to add texture. So far, I'm a fan! I have yet to try Caran D’ache Museum Aquarelle but in the meantime, the Staedtler pencils make me happy!
