This book delivers an insightful journey back to the inception of Tornado as a jointly conceived aircraft from the Cold War to its engagement in 1991 to liberate Kuwait, and beyond bringing us right up to date. This is a compelling read that blends an evocative story about the aircraft with the bravery shown by the crews and the stoicism of the families. Having been very fortunate to have met the author in 2019 and jokingly mentioned I was going to borrow a copy of Spitfire; I feel very humbled having read this now. I knew the stats relating to lost aircraft, but I hadn’t understood just what those aircrew were facing in the early phases of the war.

Just finished Tornado. It brought back some great memories of my time on the Tornado force in Germany during the 90s. This book certainly puts life into perspective.

From the very first page, John Nichol captures your interest and has a way of writing, that makes you feel he is in the room , just having a conversation with you. However, this book would appeal to anyone interested in the history of this jet, regardless of their backgrounds. A superb account of what the crews went through during a very challenging time.

Looking forward to the next aircraft book that John fixes his attention to. Having already read Spitfire and Lancaster i knew it was going to be good but i think having a personal connection with the aircraft made it extra special. I’ll finish with an outstanding quote from a significant former political leader, reflecting on the commitment and contribution of the RAF and military partners during the 1991 conflict:“Too often it is said we have no heroes.

Thoroughly recommended. Whilst the passionate stories of aircraftmen and women are beautifully woven within both Spitfire and Lancaster, in Tornado they are still within living memory of most readers… I personally remember the headline included from Today newspaper (which I bought daily at that time). Fantastic book.

Reading the accounts of the time in captivity is worth buying the book for alone. As an avid reader of Military biography’s, I enjoyed it immensely. Just finished Tornado and couldn't put it down.

10/10 I’ve read a few of John’s books, so when I saw that he’d written one about the Tornado I had to check it out.
