The amazing standard of writing made me feel as though I was there in the snow, hail, blizzards, up the mountains. I had to put this book down now & again to take a breath & at the end I was in tears! Having seen an interview with Peter May, I know he did a lot of research & much of what he wrote is possible.
Technology has moved on vastly too with electric helicopters, sophisticated AI & communications! This book is a thriller not a pure police procedural, though it involves a police investigation.
For me, this was a fantastic book. As I finished reading I felt as though I’d been on a rollercoaster, a rollercoaster of emotions. I will read this again sometime to take in more fully the wonderful writing of Peter May.
( I have read all Peter May’s books, enjoyed them all &, in my opinion, this is one of his best) The main character, Cameron Brodie, a police detective, is very flawed but I found him very likeable,& as the story unfolded I began to like him a lot.
It is set against a backdrop of immense climate change, making places we know, now unrecognisable. At heart this is still an excellent thriller investigating murder, corruption & relationships. The book is set in 2051 with flashbacks to 2023 & 2040.
