She does characters so well and uses the past present vibe brilliantly so you are never quite sure exactly where its going. As time progresses, we begin to understand why they were brought together, even if they don’t know themselves yet. until he heard about plans for an old disused site to be converted into a nature trail.

Even when I thought I knew the culprit (ah, did I, or didn't I) Candlish kept me guessing such is the superiority of her prose. If you're looking for an unforgettable read with complex, meandering, storylines and thrilling twists, look no further than The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish.

Set across dual timelines of 1995 and present day, we follow the story of Rick and his new-found romance with Marina in the 90s and then Alex and his seemingly comfortable life in present day. It is clearly linked to the events revolving around Rick decades before. Suddenly his peaceful life took on new levels of anxiety as secrets from years ago resurfaced. I loved the relentless downfall of Rick, as he descended from your average city worker and mid-twenties lad into a world of paranoia, manipulation and heartbreaking torment.

If you enjoy a thriller that propels you through it’s twists and turns and deserves to be read in a single sitting, pre-order The Only Suspect right away. . Get ready to experience some madness and mayhem as Rick’s world changes forever when he meets Marina—you won't be disappointed! For me though, the elements of male friendship that were explored through Rick and his relationship with Rollo (plus his colleagues to a lesser extent).

In 1995, we join Rick who is living the single life in Camden. No spoilers - I'll leave the "ins" & "outs", the "is it" or "isn't its", for you to discover. Even though it begins slowly as readers get to know the characters, it builds up quite quickly as our protagonists encounter more twists and turns than expected. I was really impressed by one particular twist that I just didn’t see coming!

This builds a mounting tension and helps to evade the reader, keeping us continually questioning what is going to happen whilst also allowing us to formulate our own theories and hypotheses. I was almost late to work this morning as I couldn’t wait to read the ending of this amazing book! The dual timelines are expertly woven together as we follow two characters living in two different times. Recommended.

The title is well-worded, an integral part of a highly satisfactory package of literary entertainment, a puzzle with a satisfying end. I always enjoy a Louise Candlish book but I think this is the best yet .
