Chemicals have played a devastating role too. Having looked at what we have lost - and why that is important - the author meticulously works through the major land uses in Britain, looking at how each could make changes to improve the land use not just for wildlife - but for job creation.

I had no idea we had had pelicans in UK and they are a rightful native species, had we not eaten them centuries ago! And then do something about what is suggested! Of particular note is Macdonald's excellent financial analysis of the benefits of rewilding - something often missing from other books that argue for rewilding solely for the benefit of wildlife; Mcdonald is all the more convincing for his intricate consideration of effects on local jobs and income. Buy it, read it, and share it.

Domestically and culturally we suffer from an ‘ecological tidiness disorder’ The opening chapters chronicle a depressing litany of destruction that has taken place in Britain during the Anthropocene. Rebirding is an in-depth look at the space we have in the UK, how much of it is unproductive farmland, and what we could achieve if we used just a small percentage of that space to bring wildlife back to Britain. Essential reading & inspiration for a course correction in UK conservation. He balances his radical proposals of rewilding with frank economic assessments, showing they have the potential to generate a return with the rise of ecotourism.

It was a compelling read, so I read it in 2 days. You don't have to be an ornithologist or a scientist to appreciate Rebirding. And that is his gift. Prof Barry Sloan, the Chair of the judging panel said: "Rebirding impressed the judges by its ambition and scope and by the extensive research which underpins the book’s lively and thought-provoking engagement with some of the key environmental issues in the UK and their impact on our wildlife – and especially on bird life.
