I loved the authors writing style and I cannot wait to read more by her. My one criticism, though, is the multiple typos throughout the book that took me out of the narrative each & every time. They knew it well, its danger but also its beauty. We feel stifled by the woods, ensnared by the scents and curious as to the characters.

While the multiple narratives and timelines are enjoyable and work well, the middle of the book is a bit slow and it loses some of its initial charm. Owen’s poetic prose is so powerful that you are there in the woods, walking amongst the trees, thorns and thickets, overpowered by the smell of roses that makes you feel slightly sick. I haven’t read Lauren’s debut novel ‘The Quick’ but I’m utterly spellbound by her creative literary writing. Lucia and her sisters grew up on the edge of Mockbeggar Woods.

I adore gothic fiction: there’s something about the unknown darkness in a place of beauty that really appeals to me. Here, Lauren Owen has a truly unique ability … unique talent to immediately transcend the reader to events that basically take place within a week’s time yet also span centuries. I enjoyed the story … enjoyed the clear, measured pace. Small Angels is otherworldly, immersive & dreamlike.

Lucia was an enigma and and her character development throughout the story was a masterpiece. LOVE IT. I could have continued reading this story on and on and on and never have wanted to finish it.
