the children of hurin

Reviews

Aaron Demeersseman

The story is here re-worked by Christopher Tolkien who has constructed a fully coherent narrative for the tale, avoiding invention but with extensive new detail from his father’s copious piles of notes and manuscripts, to give the reader the most complete and best-ever story of Hurin and his children. Definitely looking forward to reading it once I have time! The story of Turin and Nienor is as strong, heroic and ultimately tragic as any created by JRR Tolkien’s imagination, and this book a work of high art in itself.

Anglian Traveller

If you treasure Tolkien’s work and admire his creative imagination, this is the version you should buy. i'll put photos up if possible. Although it’s a heroic but also a dark and tragic tale, it’s likely to be more accessible to the modern reader than the ‘high style’ of The Silmarillion.

This tale first appeared in print buried in the textual body of The Silmarillion, published in 1977 after the author’s passing in 1973. The long and tragic tale of Hurin, his wife, their son Turin and daughter Nienor comprises the first of the ‘Great Tales’ of Tolkien’s First Age of Middle Earth, set in a legendary time millennia before the events recounted in the Lord of the Rings (which take place near or at the end of the Third Age).

Victor Armando Neis

i will split this review into two parts, one for the story and the other for the Deluxe edition i have. (Including some photos)Hardcover book, with a sturdy cardboard slipcase. Lee’s eight full-page, full colour paintings add a great deal to the book, conveying the essential mood music of the story with true mastery of artistic execution. There is a fold-out map at the end of the book, attached to the rear board.
