From the double Man Booker prize-winning author of the Wolf Hall trilogy comes an extraordinary work of historical imagination. But Anne has failed to give the king an heir, and Cromwell watches as Henry falls for plain Jane Seymour. Cromwell is a wholly original man: the son of a brutal blacksmith, a political genius, a briber, a charmer, a bully, a man with a delicate and deadly expertise in manipulating people and events. As these young men, key figures of the French Revolution, taste the addictive delights of power, the darker side of the period’s political ideals is unleashed – and all must face the horror that follows. Description:- Bring up the Bodies By 1535 Thomas Cromwell is Chief Minister to Henry VIII, his fortunes having risen with those of Anne Boleyn, the king’s new wife. Georges-Jacques Danton: zealous, energetic and debt-ridden.

A

Le lycée Louis-le-Grand is on la rue Saint-Jacques which traces the route of le cardo maximus de Lutèce, the great Roman south-to-north axis road of Paris. In real life de Robespierre started there aged 11 in October 1769, staying until he was 23, studying to be a solicitor.

Dr Charlie Mansfield

Le lycée Louis-le-Grand features in the early scenes of the novel of the French Revolution by Hilary Mantel (1992) A Place of Greater Safety so it is a popular spot for book lovers when on literary pilgrimage to the Latin Quarter in the 5th & 6th arrondissements of Paris. My paperback copy safely arrived from Amazon in time for Valentine's Day 2018. I chose this for my lockdown read and I found it hard to put down!

It is to this grammar school that both the young de Robespierre and Desmoulins are sent in the story. It covers the lives and fates of three key figures from the French Revolution and takes them from their childhoods onwards- encompassing families and friendships as the plot moves inexorably toward and through the events of the Terror. As a reader you can sense and feel the fear as fortunes change through the revolution.

The different personalities are well developed, with a vivid eye for details. I would recommend this book.
