confessions of a forty something

Reviews

Zoe

We follow her through a whole year of her life, month by month, as she slowly gets back on her feet. This book is funny, but also a bit heart wrenching - the scale from "the glove incident" (🤣) to "your dad is in hospital" (😢) is STEEP - but that is what makes this book so relatable. Even enemies of Nell were well-rounded when they just antagonised her and we disliked them.

From start to finish I have read this with a huge smile on my face. It is such a feel good and funny read! Potter touches on sensitive topics with careful consideration of the reader but without sugar-coating the very real effects they have on people.

The characters ,especially Nell and Cricket are so likeable and Nells story is so very relatable and makes you realise we are all doing okay. 4. I laughed out loud, shed a tear and got angry on behalf of Nell. Trying to find her feet again she runs into a mountain of obstacles but Nell Stevens is never one to back down.

I admit I was slightly daunted by the size of this book (500 pages). Of course, nothing is what it seems. ). It's been a long wait for it due to the publication date being put back, but at last it's here and it was everything I hoped for and more.

The result is a bubblier version of Thomas Moore’s Dark Nights of the Soul. Bridget Jones without the unrealistic love interests. She scorns friends’ social media posts portraying idyllic lives that seem to mock her sense of failure.

She was real and natural as a character, her hopelessness felt genuine and within the first few chapters we are already rooting for her to have a happy ending. I'm grateful for:1. I loved their little battles over the thermostat and the toilet rolls. It wasn't just Nell that became a memorable part of this novel, Potter seems to have a brilliant knack for creating perfect characters for the experience or connection Nell required from them.
