Hill Walker

I read these books (and The Hobbit) every year and still have the atlas open for every chapter. .

), Buckland and The Marish, Helm's Deep, Tol Brandir, Udûn and the Black Gate. She has brought a dimension to Tolkien which I can only drool over. Add to this all the major battle scenes and a panoply of realms and kingdoms plus thematic topologies of climate, landforms, vegetation and population and you have before you an extremely well written document which I feel illustrates Tolkien's work admirably and, with some knowledge of the choice of extant commentaries, without equal.

even the back cover's adorned with a fabulously detailed map of the Hithaeglir! I just love this book. It covers battles in details and the paths of the armies etc.

Here's a short list of some specifics to whet your appetite if you need convincing: the Gates and Falls of Sirion, Menegroth, Echoriath and Gondolin, various representations of Belegaer including one with a Great Rift running north to south (perhaps analogous to Earth's mid Atlantic rift. Karen Wynn Fonstad was a professional cartographer and it certainly shows in this truly magnificent atlas which could potentially have been called Atlas of Ëa although she does actually focus most of her excellent geographical scholastic skills on Middle Earth. Treat yourself and get a hardcover copy because if you're a die-hard Tolkien fanatic, I can guarantee you'll otherwise wear it out! "The Atlas of Middle Earth" is available as the original 1981 edition (left book in photo), revised 1991 edition (middle), and revised 2016 edition (right).

The book also reveals information regarding structures as well. The atlas provides an enhanced and more engaging experience, especially when reading "The Lord of the Rings" or "The Silmarillion". How I ever missed this work, I will never know (I've just received my copy from Amazon). Fonstad delivers in spades in her revised publication.

As it's name is Atlas, you will get everything, people of races, their languages, food, weather, I mean literally everything. She also presents various notable journeys including those of the Elves from Cuiviénen, Turin and Nienor, Beren and Lúthien, Frodo and Sam as well as the voyages of the Númenóreans and the Dwarves' migrations.

The newest 2016 edition has the same information as the 1991 edition, but is printed on substantially higher-quality paper. You will get everything from this book, that Tolkien created from beginning of Arda (Earth) to the end. This book have all the maps from the First Age, to Fourth Age.
