In order to just drill through the side of the body, you would have to add a support block in the inside so you have something to run the screw into. The next guitar I buy will have these as well. In my opinion, that is a poor design. The strap moving back and forth was making the nut come loose for the jack.

The strap I fitted it on was from on a guitar strap from AGS, UK where the strap hole size was tight, but I prefer it that way as it holds much better. I bought these first for my acoustic because the strap button that was on the bottom is also the jack where you plug a cord in to use the pickups.

It depends on the instrumant strap and the strap hole size. I attached pictures of these strap buttons on my acoustic as well as on my strat. That would involve taking the strings off, putting the correct radius on some wood block that you most likely don't have, etc. I'm a mechanical engineer, so I research stuff.

The edges of the body are too thin to support this. I didn't want to go through all that so I went with the easier but just as effective method of putting them where there is already wood reinforcement.

I have these strap locks on at least 5 of my guitars now because they work so well! With these, you simply push a button and insert the strap portion into the strap button and release. I think they look great, and they were inexpensive here on amazon too! So I looked them up on the rain forest here and gave them a try.
